Underglaze Pencil Cobalt Green 003
Underglaze pencils allow you to draw, sketch, write, and create detailed designs directly on bisque-fired pottery. They offer the same control and precision as a colored pencil on paper and can be blended with your fingers to create soft shading effects.
Firing Range: Cone 06 to Cone 10
Best Application
For best results, apply to clean bisque-fired ware. The pencil markings remain delicate before glazing and firing, so avoid excessive handling as the color may smudge when touched.
Mistakes can be easily corrected using a clean damp sponge or a soft eraser before glazing.
Glazing Recommendations
To preserve fine details and prevent smudging, we highly recommend applying glaze by:
- Dipping the piece into the glaze
- Dabbing the glaze on carefully with a sponge
These methods minimize disturbance of the decoration and help maintain crisp lines and vibrant colors.
Applying clear glaze with a brush directly over the decoration may cause the underglaze pencil markings to smear or smudge.
For best results, we recommend using a zinc-free clear glaze to minimize unwanted reactions with underglaze colors and preserve the original appearance of your artwork.
Tips & Testing Notes
We have successfully tested these underglaze pencils on top of Stroke & Coat® glazes for outlining and adding fine details, with excellent results.
The White Underglaze Pencil performs particularly well on black and dark clay bodies.
